How does watching porn and masturbating glorify God?

In a previous article I debunked 10 common arguments against Christians viewing porn.  But once we debunk those arguments the next line assault comes in from those who oppose people exercising and enjoying their sexual natures as God designed them.

The argument is two fold.

The first argument is :

“The Bible tell us not engage in uncleanliness, fornication or the desires of the flesh – viewing porn and masturbating does all these these things.”

The second argument is:

“Even if “uncleanliness”, “fornication” and “the desire of flesh” does not include the activities of viewing porn and masturbating – how could one argue that these activities glorify God?”

Below are a list of common scriptures that are hurled by Christians at those Christians who believe that viewing porn and masturbating are not sinful activities and that these activities when done in moderation and at the right times can actually glorify God.

“But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;”

Ephesians 5:3 (KJV)

Does the Bible say that watching porn and masturbating is a sexually immoral activity(fornication)?

Does the Bible say that watching porn and masturbating is are unclean activities?

Does the Bible say that watching porn and masturbating is are covetous activities?

The answer to all these questions is NO. Those who oppose masturbation and viewing porn must read those things into these words.

The last phrase “let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints” means that the unsaved world should never think that we as saints would engage in fornication, uncleanness or covetousness. It has nothing to do with what we read or watch.  In other words we are not forbidden from reading a story or watching a movie that has people fornicating or doing other sinful activities like murder or theft.  If we were forbidden from watching or reading stories that had people sinning in them then we could not read the Bible because it has stories of people doing all these sinful things.

When I was growing up in strict Baptist churches this passage from Ephesians was mishandled badly in this way telling Christians they could not watch a movie or TV show if it had one swear word, one act of a couple even having simulated sex outside marriage, murder or theft. Basically by their standards you should not watch TV or movies because they contain people committing sinful activities.

However not one Scripture passage including this one from Ephesians 5:3 tells us that we cannot watch a movie or read a story that has people sinning it.  We are surrounded by sin because of the world we live in. The point is – we should not be engaging in these sins, not that anything we read or watch cannot have any one committing sin in it.

“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”

I Corinthians 10:31 (KJV)

How does watching porn and masturbating glorify God? This is another question that anti-porn folks use.  But really this argument again is used with many other things other than porn.  My super strict conservative Christian friends who opposed playing cards, drinking any alcohol,  going to movie theaters and watching TV would use the same argument.

How does play cards or really playing any game(including video games) glorify God?

How does drinking alcohol glorify God?

How does attending a movie at a movie theater glorify God?

How does watching TV glorify God?

The answer to these questions is found in the very verse above that they cite:

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do”

The Bible tells us that the act of eating food and drinking actually glorifies God. It also tells us that many other things we do “whatsoever” have the potential to glorify God.

So I would follow this up with some questions of my own back to those who ask how watching porn and masturbating can glorify God:

How does enjoying the sight and smell of a beautiful flower glorify God?

How does you getting hungry after a food commercial glorify God?

How does going out and finding that food to eat after getting hungry from watching the commercial glorify God?

How does having a bowel movement after eating that sandwich glorify God?

The answer to all these questions is the same.  When we do what God designed us to do we glorify God.  It is only when  we go against his design that what we are doing could be considered sinful.

So if I enjoy a baseball game on TV with my sons I am glorify God because God designed that I should enjoy great competition with my sons.

Even if I enjoyed the game all by myself that also glorifies God because he wants me to relax and he gave me my love for the competition of baseball(if I were a baseball fan but I really am not).

When I see a commercial for some food and it arouses my hunger this glorifies God because he designed me to be aroused by the sights and smell of food. When I eat and experience the pleasure of my taste buds with that food he again is glorified by my acting on his design in me.

When men go out and play football together this glorifies God because he designed men to aggressive and competitive.

When I play a violent army video game this glorifies God by my exercising my masculine aggressive tendencies in healthy way.

In the same way when I see a beautiful woman in front of me, or a picture of a beautiful woman or an image of a couple having sex and I become aroused(sexually hungry) and then I eat(masturbate) this also glorifies God as I am acting on his design in me. If God had intended that I only actually become aroused by a woman that I am married to he would have installed an off switch and made it where we are only aroused after marriage. But that is not how God designed us.

Now if I become sexually aroused by the sight of a beautiful woman and then I conceive in my mind a way to get her to have sex outside of marriage with me  – now I have just sinned(lusted after her). Now I am no longer glorifying God because I have gone outside his design.  If I get that woman to have sex with me outside of marriage I have further shamed myself before God and my actions are no longer glorifying because they violate his design.

So you see the burden is on our friends who are against masturbation and viewing porn to prove that God did not design us to experience sexual pleasure from these things and that we were only to experience sexual pleasure with a woman we are married to.  I agree that we are only to have sexual relations in marriage – that is a Biblical fact. However there is a huge difference between experiencing our sexuality(enjoying sexual pleasure) by ourselves and us having sexual relations with another person.

“And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.”

Romans 14:23 (KJV)

Yes if you have doubt that you can watch porn and masturbate then you should not until you are clear in your mind that you can. But if you examine the Scriptures and see that it does not condemn sexual imagination, viewing sexual images or masturbating you can be sure these things are not sinful and enjoy them in full faith knowing you are acting in ways in which God designed you to act.

And for those who say “well they did not have porn back then so that is why the Apostles never condemned Christians enjoying erotic imagery”.  Well those people would be wrong.  They had very sexual images in the form of paintings, sculptures and other works of art going back several thousand years before the time of Christ.  Paul and the other Apostles would have been surrounded by such sexual imagery – yet they never condemned sexual arousal, or the enjoying sexual imagery.  Only sexual relations outside of marriage and lust(the desire to have unlawful sexual relations outside of marriage) were condemned.

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?  For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

I Corinthians 6:19-20 (KJV)

Again see my previous section about glorifying God on I Corinthians 10:31 .  God could have made it impossible for us to masturbate.  Yet he gave us the ability to do this.  He put in us the pleasure we receive from viewing beautiful women and masturbating. These activates only become sinful when they stop us from fully living out our sexual design by seeking out a woman in marriage and having sex with her. A man who full embraces his God given sexuality will enjoy the sight of beautiful women before and after he is married, he will enjoy the sight of his wife and having sex with his wife as well and he will also enjoy masturbating both before and after marriage.  This is a man who is fulling acting upon his God given sexual design.

“Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

2 Timothy 2:22 (KJV)

Yes we should flee youthful lusts.  Amen.  But what are youthful lusts? Do you see masturbating and porn there in the text? I do not. Lust in sense has do with “sinful desires”.  Young people because of their sinful nature and much higher sex drives are more tempted to have sex outside of marriage than older people who are already married and have a sexual outlet.   So yes as I say on my site all the time – the enemy is not porn and masturbation for young people – it is premarital sex. So Paul is saying among other things – “Young people – run away from situations that might tempt you to have pre-marital sex.” This is why I recommend that young people masturbate before going on dates so as to relieve their sexual pressure and reduce temptation to pre-marital sex.

“One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.”

Romans 14:5 (KJV)

Amen and Amen.  Be fully persuaded in your mind that you can act on how God has designed you. He is the one that put that spark in your brain that sends pleasure throughout your body when you happen to glance at a woman’s cleavage or when you see the small of her back or the tightness of her hips and butt.  That is a gift from God man! Be fully persuaded.

“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.”

Romans 8:12 (KJV)

Yes we should not live after our sinful nature(the flesh) which desires to do that which is contrary to God’s design.  Again nothing here about enjoying the sight of beautiful women or porn or masturbating.

“I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.”

Romans 6:19 (KJV)

Again where does the Bible say uncleanness is referring to porn and masturbation? Uncleanness refers to sin the Bible actually mentions like homosexual relations, prostitution, wife swapping and orgies, incest and bestiality. Never once do the Scriptures refer to a man being sexually aroused by the sight of a woman as unclean or a man masturbating as unclean.

“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;”

I Thessalonians 4:3-4 (KJV)

Again see my previous comments on fornication – no mention of viewing porn, being aroused by the sight of a woman or masturbating.

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

Galatians 5:16 (KJV)

Amen.  Walk in Spirit and you will not fulfill the sin nature(flesh).  The Bible does not condemn the desires God gave to our body both for food and sex and other types of physical enjoyment.  What he condemns is sensuality which is making physical pleasure the center of our lives.

I suggest you read these articles I wrote on the subjects of sensuality and enjoying physical pleasures:
