Societies that allow porn experience a large reduction in sex crimes

Christian sites and non-Christian sites alike often lay all the sexual sins that occur in our society at the feet of porn.  We are often told that rapists and serial killers used porn before they committed their atrocious acts as if porn made them do it.  The reality is that porn in the cases of these men actually saved lives and saved women from being raped. These men used porn to attempt to satisfy their wicked desires before porn was not enough and could not satisfy them anymore and they had to act out those wicked desires.

“Despite the widespread and increasing availability of sexually explicit materials, according to national FBI Department of Justice statistics, the incidence of rape declined markedly from 1975 to 1995. This was particularly seen in the age categories 20–24 and 25–34, the people most likely to use the Internet. The best known of these national studies are those of Berl Kutchinsky, who studied Denmark, Sweden, West Germany, and the United States in the 1970s and 1980s. He showed that for the years from approximately 1964 to 1984, as the amount of pornography increasingly became available, the rate of rapes in these countries either decreased or remained relatively level. Later research has shown parallel findings in every other country examined, including Japan, Croatia, China, Poland, Finland, and the Czech Republic. In the United States there has been a consistent decline in rape over the last 2 decades, and in those countries that allowed for the possession of child pornography, child sex abuse has declined. Significantly, no community in the United States has ever voted to ban adult access to sexually explicit material. The only feature of a community standard that holds is an intolerance for materials in which minors are involved as participants or consumers.

In terms of the use of pornography by sex offenders, the police sometimes suggest that a high percentage of sex offenders are found to have used pornography. This is meaningless, since most men have at some time used pornography. Looking closer, Michael Goldstein and Harold Kant found that rapists were more likely than nonrapists in the prison population to have been punished for looking at pornography while a youngster, while other research has shown that incarcerated nonrapists had seen more pornography, and seen it at an earlier age, than rapists. What does correlate highly with sex offense is a strict, repressive religious upbringing. Richard Green too has reported that both rapists and child molesters use less pornography than a control group of “normal” males.”

The first key statement from excerpt article above associating porn as the source for sex crimes:

“In terms of the use of pornography by sex offenders, the police sometimes suggest that a high percentage of sex offenders are found to have used pornography. This is meaningless, since most men have at some time used pornography”

Saying that because most sex offenders have used porn that porn caused them to commit those crimes is like saying because a lot criminals use guns that guns cause crime. The fact is the vast majority of gun owners do commit crimes just as the vast majority of porn users do not commit sex crimes.

That last statement about a strict, repressive religious upbringing is absolutely true.  The highest numbers of compulsive porn users who use porn irresponsibly or get into other sexual troubles are people that are raised in strict fundamentalist homes.

If you repress human sexuality and do not allow it to be exercised in normal and healthy ways, it will inevitably lead to true perversion (as opposed to perceived perversion) and every type of sexual sin imaginable.

Some might take my statement about “human sexuality” to be a defense of homosexuality or other abnormal sexual desires and that is not the case.

We are all born in sin and our natures are corrupted in different ways.  Homosexual and bisexual desires are a corruption of the sexual nature God designed us with.

This is why we as Christians should support programs that help people to change and channel their corrupted homosexual natures into heterosexual desires.  Does it always work? No.  Do they sometimes have to live celibate lives? Yes.  But if we can help them to channel and reprogram their sexuality we should.

But now let’s return to subject of the relation between porn and the reduction in sexually related crimes in society. There are millions of sexually frustrated men in the world. It is not a sin or a crime for a man to feel sexually frustrated, but what he does with that sexual frustration can become sinful and criminal.  The vast majority of men do not act out in this frustration by sexually sinning against other people, contrary to the assertions of some groups that see most men as potential rapists and child molesters. But the sad reality is that a small number of men do act out sexually in ways that are sinful and criminal.

There is also a much smaller population of men that have deviant and wicked desires to hurt women and want to rape women.

In both of these cases porn has been shown to give these types of men an outlet that does not cause harm to anyone around them.
