Ladies – Don’t Be A Pig

How often do we hear from women “men are pigs!” and usually this is in reference to men being slobs or men acting in what may or may not be inappropriate sexual ways toward women.  But did you know the Bible exhorts women not to act like pigs? In Proverbs 11:22 the Bible says “As a jewel of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion”.

When a woman speaks out of place that is a woman without discretion.  An example would be when a woman’s father or husband are speaking with a group of people and the woman interjects with an opinion that contradicts her father or her husband.

A woman who says whatever she wants, whenever she wants and however, she wants to say it is a pig.

  1. The irony of that statement is that women are filthier in public. I’ve cleaned restrooms for years, back in my old job, and believe me, the Women’s Room was the filthier one 99% of the time.

  2. Sam,

Certainly the Bible also extols men to practice discretion as well. For instance Proverbs 19:11 states “The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression”. And there are many times when the Bible says something that it can refer to both sexes equally.

But while men and women are both exhorted to conduct their lives with discretion, what that discretion looks like for a man and a woman are two very different things because men and women occupy different positions in God’s creation. We read of this principle in 1 Corinthians 11:3 & 7-9 where it states the following:

3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God…

7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
8 For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.
9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.”
    1 Corinthians 11:7-10 (KJV)

So in the context of how women speak and conduct themselves in the presence of men it will be very different for them. One man can hear the conversation of three other men and interject his opinion in the discussion and would not necessarily be indiscreet for him to do so. However when a woman, especially one who is under the authority of one of those men, inserts herself into the discussion this could be an act of indiscretion especially if her opinion is disagreement with her male authority.

The Bible instead values a “meek and quiet spirit” in women according to 1 Peter 3:4.
